{ Verses 7 and 8 }

by Andrew M. Greeley

..New Moon
New Moon

Why, 0 moon, do they call you new,
When you peek around the curtain?
A routine act, fixed and certain,
It's just the same old silly you

A most frivolous temptation
A lifeless rock, hunk of greenish cheese
You're no novelty, if you please,
But a trite, tiresome distraction,

A romantic, seductive tease,
A cliched, commonplace allure,
Even if, as you claim, maiden pure
With your bittersweet youthful pleas!

You return each month all too soon
In lacy lingerie of blue.
Don't you know I have much to do,
No time for you 0 pretty moon?

Quarter Moon

Shy, slender, silver,
Sleek, shapely, sly,
Quarter moon
Turns her face
Fades in the lattice work of trees.

Silent, seductive, secretive
Silky smooth, sinuous,
Not interested in my love
Pretends she is not naked
To my fascinated eyes.

Bride aware of the lover
Ogling her beauty
As he lurks -wide-eyed
Mouth open, blood racing,
Hungry in her garden.

Needing, leading, pleading
Womanly, wild, wondrous
Wise waif, wanton, warm,
She slips swiftly through the trees
Promises, promises, promises.

Promises what?
Allure, mystery, romance,
Excitement, adventure, surprise,
Modest maiden, winsome wife,
Merry matron, madcap muse.

Sorry, Moon, too old
For that sort of thing.
