Fifth Sunday of the Year Lk 5 /1-11. |
||
| Background: Events move swiftly in Luke's deft story of the early days in Nazareth. Freshness, excitement, hope abound. Something new is happening, something filled with promise. Jesus has announced good news. It is not altogether clear to the band of men gathering around him what exactly the news is but they are very enthusiastic about it. It would have seemed absolutely impossible to those around Jesus that this clean, wonderful time could end up in the horror of crucifixion. How could events possibly take such a tragic turn. All human activities, given sufficient time, seem to go badly. |

| Story: Once upon at time there was a new basketball coach that everyone loved. He had taken over a run of the mill team which had not done well for a couple of years. Because he was so smart and so good with the players, the team turned around. The sports writers from their city said that he had made this team of malcontents and loafers into the best team in the league. The coach was a wonder worker, a genius. The best coach in the league. They would win the championship this year. Then one Sunday afternoon they came to another city to play the reigning champions - I think the gym they played in might be called the United Center, though I don't know why it's called that. Well, they built up a big first quarter lead against the champs (I don't know what they're called!) and maintained that lead until half way through the third quarter. Then the champs made their move (as they always do) and blew them out of the gym and in the general direction of a nearby lake. The players were sullen and angry at one another. The coach had not really prepared them. The sports writers turned against him. With all the talent he had on the team, why couldn't they beat the aging champs? It was all his fault. Sure he had turned the team around, but what had he done for them lately. They wanted miracles every game. (the above story is totally fictional!) |
