28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Mt 22/1-14Background
The theme of today's Gospel is much like that of last week. We hear another parable of urgency, another tale of monumental stupidity, another narrative about stupid, ungrateful, self-destructive human beings. The idiocy of the characters in this story, like those in last week's, boggles the mind. How can anyone be that stupid! How can people refuse an invitation to what will be a grand party!
Story
Once upon a time a little girl was about to have her seventh birthday party. Now all know how little girls enjoy birthday parties, especially their own. But this particular little girl, I think her name was Fiona, was really a birthday freak. She loved birthday parties more than any other girl her age in the whole parish. She wanted everyone to have fun at the party. Her parents bought videotapes and cookies and cake and ice cream and some very special prizes for everyone that came. She invited every little girl she knew to the party. They all knew how generous she was at other parties so they were certain that the party would be perfectly splendid. Some even said that the presents she will give us at her own party will be better than the ones we will give her. It'll be fun and totally good deal besides. But some of the little girls, the most popular ones of course, were unhappy that she had invited everyone, even the geeks. What fun would a party be if the geeks were there. So those that weren't geeks (that is they thought they weren't because they were the worst of the geeks) made up excuses for not coming. Than those that weren't geeks said, well, no one is going to be at her party, so we won't go either. On the day of the party only four little girls showed up. What were they going to do with all the food and the games and the prizes? Well, the birthday girl saw that all the boys were hanging around outside, so she let them in. The boys were very well behaved and didn't break hardly anything. Besides they helped clean up afterwards.
