First Sunday of Advent LUKE 21:25-28, 34-36 |

| Background: Luke’s presentation of Jesus’ eschatological discourse alludes to his realization that there is a delay in the arriving of the parousia (end time). He still anticipates an end time. However, while awaiting the return of the Son of Man, his followers are urged to be on guard and to pray. The end time still has not arrived and the conditions that indicate an approaching end time have been present from Luke’s time up until our present day. His exhortation for correct behavior holds true for us as we face the individual and community trials of our lives in this age. |

Story: Once upon a time, not so very long ago, Tom was the star player on his high school’s football and basketball teams. He scored the final touchdown (in addition to two early touchdowns) as his team won the city championship. During the basketball season he saved many a game with brilliant shots and a near perfect free throw record. His perfect free throw shots in the city championship gave the school its second championship of the school year. Most of his teammates were hopeful that their place on a championship team would assure them a sport’s scholarship. Some of them and their parents had been planning on this for years as the players spent most of their summers from about fifth grade on at various sports camps. However, a few parents wondered if he would get any offers. After all, he had never attended a sports camp. They felt his star performance that year was just a matter of luck. Everyone was wondering what schools would come recruiting Tom and some people were even placing bets on which sport he would opt to play in college.
