Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke1:1-4, 4:14-21 |
||
| Background: The introduction to Lukes gospel sets forth his purpose for writing yet another account of the events of Jesus life. This Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles are his testimony regarding the reliability of what those who were present during Jesus life have passed on to those who, like Luke, are second generation believers. The remainder of the reading passes over the time of preparation in Jesus life and brings us to the start of his ministry in Galilee, his home territory. In a Sabbath service at the synagogue in Nazareth, his home town, Jesus, the observant Jew, reads the second lesson of the day, a prophecy concerning the restoration of Israel. At the conclusion, foreshadowing the remainder of the story, Jesus surprises his listeners by applying the words of the prophecy to himself. |

| Story: Once upon a time not so very long ago a father and his five year old daughter, Grace, saw a rainbow. The father, a man with a scientific mind, told Grace how rainbows formed. When they returned home, Grace, who not only believed everything her father said but who also was a very bright five year old, explained to her mother and other siblings how rainbows formed. One day in her kindergarten class, a ray of sun hit the metal on the fish tank and Johnny, one of the know-it-all boys in the room, announced that it was a rainbow. Grace was quick to point out that it was not a rainbow .She then gave her explanation of how rainbows formed. Johnny, who did not like being corrected, responded that she was wrong. Grace said she was right. Her daddy had told her that was how rainbows formed. Johnnys response was, "Your Daddy is stupid!" Even kindergartners do not like one of their own having special knowledge! |
