The Gospel today is taken from the Last Supper Discourse of Jesus, a discourse which provides the author of the Gospel with an opportunity to spin out at great and powerful length his theme of the unity between Jesus and the Father and our resultant unity through Jesus (to whom we are united) with the Father.

 While the discourse is a theological reflection on the revelation of the nature of God which Jesus unveiled, it is nothing more than an attempt to plumb the depths of the good news which Jesus preached

 We are inextricably united to God and we can never be separated from God's love, a love in which both the maternal and the paternal are combined.

Fr. Greeley's Last Book:

 Once upon a time a soldier who had been missing in action and presumed dead was finally released and came home. He was sure his wife and children had forgotten about him, so long had he been presumed dead. He wondered whether it would be a good idea not to go home. He would simply cause stress and strain in a family what had long ago given up on him. His children would be pretty well grown up. His wife might have fallen in love with someone else and who could blame her if she thought her husband was dead. But the government said he had to go home at least at first. He'd been away so long he wasn't sure how to act in America or how to greet his family. He didn't think they'd recognize him or that he would recognize them. He was terrified at the prospect of finally coming home, because home wouldn't be what it used to be and could never be that again.

 So when the plane landed and he got off...everyone in the family rushed to hug him and kiss him and welcome back.

 In a week or two it was like he'd never been away.
His family had never let him go and they never would. And they all lived happily ever after.

 So it is with God who never lets us ago.

Psalm 27:1,4,7-8

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life;  of whom shall I be afraid?
4 One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after;  that I may dwell in the house of the LORD  all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.
7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me!
8 You have said, "Seek my face." My heart says to you, "Your face, LORD, do I seek."
